Saturday, February 19, 2011 1000 The Accokeek Volunteer Fire Department would like to recognize two of its members for a heroic rescue while at work. On Saturday, Captain Steven Hainey and Lieutenant Joshua Carlson were working at the Naval District of Washington Fire Department on Engine 42. The crew was finishing up a drill at the Bolling Air Force Base Marina when they observed a dangerous situation. A small aluminum boat was at the entrance of the marina with two people on board fixing a boom in the water. However, because of the intense wind conditions in the area the water had waves breaking over the boat. Firefighters Hainey and Carlson stood-by with two other crew members keeping watch in the event the boat overturned. As the crew was watching the boat did become swamped and overturned. Firefighters Carlson and Hainey reacted swiftly. They retrieved the rescue equipment and climbed over a fence to were they could access the victims. One victim was quickly reached with a rope and removed from the water. The second victim was becoming distressed and was in the process of sinking in the water. FF Hainey was able to expertly throw the life ring and rope to the victim so he could be pulled to safety. Once both victims had been removed from the water the crew began providing EMS care. A short time later DC Fire Department Fireboat arrived and was able to assist in removing the boat from the water. The members of the Accokeek Volunteer Fire Department are very proud to congratulate Steven and Josh on an excellent job.

Saturday, January 15, 2011 0237 Just after 0230 Saturday morning, a box alarm was dispatched for the 16300 block of Livingston Road in Accokeek. As crews were reporting to the station they saw that there was a one story house with fire showing from the roof. Engine 241, Engine 242 and Chief 24 responded with 8 volunteers. Engine 241 layed a supply line and then advanced an 1 3/4" attack line inside lead by Chief 24-A. Saturday, January 1, 2011 The 2011 New Year sent the volunteer crew from Company 24 to three working fires in less than 24 hours. The day started off with a working fire in on Heritage Place in Waldorf at approximately 1315. Tower 23 responded with 4 personnel. Upon arrival the crew was assigned Rapid Intervention, but was then re-directed to assist with ventilation. The second fire of the day was at 1845 on L'Enfant Drive in Fort Washington. Engine 241 responded with 3 volunteers. First arriving crews found a mattress fire which was quickly controlled. The Accokeek crew stood by but was not utilized. As command was releasing the Engine, PSC was dispatching another house fire in Oxon Hill which called for the services of Engine 241. The crew responded to Dunwoody Avenue and found a single story house with fire coming from a laundry room. The Engine crew deployed a back-up line and worked in the car port area and protecting exposures. Once the fire was knocked down crews tried to secure the utilities. Unfortunately, all utility controls were inside of the laundry room. This resulted in the house becoming energized and a natural gas leak to develop. Command evacuated all personnel until Washington Gas and Pepco could secure the house. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for electrocution. The Engine remained on the scene for just over two hours working on overhaul and racking hose before returning home.
