Sunday, January 15, 2012 1809 On Sunday evening just as the volunteers were finishing up with another bingo fundraiser PSC dispatched a reported house fire in the area of Accokeek Road and Livingston Road. Engine 241, Engine 242, Chief 24-A and the Ambulance (from 47’s area) responded on the call with a total of 8 volunteers. Once in the area crews found smoke conditions but could not immediately locate the source. The trucks quickly spread out to check the area and found a vacant two story house off the road with a fire on the second floor. The crew advanced a 2 ½” stack tip line over a road blockage, a fence and through the yard to the second floor. Once upstairs they found two rooms on fire with extension into the attic. Firefighters worked quickly to open the house up and locate all hidden fire in the void spaces. The crews remained on the scene for four hours while the cause of the fire was investigated.

ATTENTION CITIZENS OF PG COUNTY!!!!!

Friday, September 30, 2011    We are asking all Prince George's County residents who support the volunteer Fire/EMS system to please call the offices of County Executive Rushern Baker (301-952-4131) and Council Chair Ingrid Turner (301-952-3094), and your District Councilperson to let them know that you are 100% opposed to the "Fire Protection Oversight Bills" (CB-060-2011) that are currently under consideration by the Public Safety and Fiscal Management committee, and that you fully support the current Fire Commission.

The bills would dramatically alter the structure and role of the Fire Commission which has represented the volunteers of Prince George's County for 40 years. The current Commission consists of 9 representatives elected by the volunteer corporations, and is responsible for oversight of the volunteer budget, fiscal audits, and certification of volunteer officers, among other responsibilities. The proposed legislation would eliminate the elected Commissioners, replacing them with nine appointees: three representing the volunteers, three representing the career staff, and three representing County citizens at large. The new Commission would function solely in an advisory capacity to the County Fire Chief, and would have no direct control over any funding. This would severely impact the financial health of many of the County's volunteer fire department.

The volunteer fire service in Prince George's County dates back to the late 1800s. Things have changed a lot over the years, and the current combination system reflects those changes. Volunteer corporations still own 75% of the fire apparatus and 75% of the fire stations in the County. More than 1,500 volunteers stand ready to answer the call for help, day or night, and they receive the same or higher levels of training as paid firefighters. Volunteer and career personnel have successfully worked side-by-side for 40 years, and many paid firefighters begain their careers in the fire service as volunteers. Another 500 Volunteers serve in administrative and support roles. The proposed legislation will not improve that system, but could harm it irreparably.

Please support your local volunteers by contacting Mr. Baker, Ms. Turner, and your County Council District Representative.

Charles County Fatal House Fire

Thursday, August 4, 2011 0610 Early Thursday morning at a few minutes past 0600, the engine from Company 24 was alerted to Charles County for a working house fire with children trapped. The Engine responded with 3 volunteers along with the Chief and Deputy Chief. Initially, the house had been occupied by one adult and six children. Upon detection of the fire, the mother was able to get three children out of the house before being overcome by smoke. Then prior to any fire departments arrival two landscapers from Denison Landscaping and a Charles County Sheriff were able to utilize a neighbor’s ladder to remove one child from a window. First arriving crews from Bryans Road confirmed a working house fire with two children still trapped. The crew made a rapid search of the house and was able to remove one child suffering life threatening injuries and was turned over to Medics. Further arriving crews assisted in searching the house furiously trying to find the missing child. Unfortunately by the time the last child was found they had succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead on the scene. The Accokeek Volunteers extend our sympathy to the family for their loss. And we also commend all of the brave firefighters, sheriffs and civilians who worked so tirelessly trying to save the lives of everyone in the house.
